andra is a black belt!
2 1/2 years of accelerated gradings whenever possible and a torn hamstring limiting my training these last few months. I certainly could have done better but i did pretty good.. especially the sparring!
Yes, I do feel proud of myself. But it is only the beginning, of course.

Feminism is dead - really?
i agree... but there's confidence and there's the real world. Power, security and wealth are still largely male domains. Yes, there are more women bank managers... but i think being a bank manager has become a downgraded job. There are still very few female CEOs, board leaders, Exec Directors, Ministers etc.
what gets my goat! is that girls are proud of their right to take all their clothes off and have casual sex. YYAAYY! But whose best interest is being served? You still can't get paid! Why not legitimise sex work if we're going to make an industry out of promoting the sexualisation of women.
show me the money!

Body Dysmorphia and Web2.3
i think that there is a massive increase in body image and eating disorder issues world wide and this connects to the globalisation of mass media PLUS the increase in wealth (side issue - more of the world's poor are fat than skinny these days... although skinny is still starving to death) .
having just explored facebook i am feeling more optimistic about our ability as a society to restore the body image balance. the surge in facebook and web2.3 social spaces allows us the freedom to create connections unrestricted by our physical presence and whatever body image issues (dysmorphia) we have can become secondary... or can be explored.
perhaps this is the real avatar assault!

Sexualisation vs Infantilisation!
there is an industry around promoting the sexualisation of women and young girls. i find it disturbing that fashion seems to incorporate a lot of 'baby' stuff at the same time as teens and tweens are being sexualised. the line is being blurred in both directions.
what does this mean in terms of maturity? or wanting not to be mature? i know an 18yr old who is very proud of wearing clothes from the childrens' section. this ties in to body image and eating disorder issues.
I need black belt in new technology!
Suddenly, I need to coordinate (and have accounts in) Facebook, Google, Picasa, You Tube, My Space and whatever happened to Wayne's whatever... I'm sure there are more... I keep signing up for things and losing the details. although, i used to have my own website for a while which i can now bury.
Now, I'm just going to get very confused for a while and annoy all my friends with redundant multiplicities. Except that most of my so called friends are luddites with personal policies against wasting time in virtual realities who will never ever read anything i say! or even look at the pictures :(
Black Belt approaches
Unfortunately I'm not looking as fierce as I'd hoped. My hamstring tear took a good 3 months off my prep and I'm still sore. Long recovery! It appears that I am getting older. Which is all the more reason to do this NOW! Fortunately all the grandmasters are at important meeting in Melb re future of TK in Aust... perhaps fall out of TK Aust sacking from AOC?
Anyway. One way that being a couch potato has helped me with black belt is finding some good patterns on You Tube.
Links coming up. (when i've learned to drive video blogging)
Azabela returns
This blog celebrates my youngest daughter's mythical creation "Azabel the Green Reaper", who sleeps with her sword. She screams and leaps as well. After years of wanting to be a woman warrior and of wanting a website or meeting place for other female fighters, I am finally taking action. Take notice.
Here is where I hope to revisit my collection of great women's science fiction and fantasy, epic adventure characters and women writers. I make no apology for straying wherever my interest leads me, from inspiring films and paintings to real life female fighters I train with like Holly Fernley, 5 times world champion kickboxer, and Eleni, the youngest female Tae Kwondo junior blackbelt in Australia (she's 6).
While I'm throwing down my metaphorical gauntlet, here goes for 2007:
- Blackbelt
- Sparring and my first ever tournament (or two)
- Loss of another 10 to 12 kilos
- Full splits (give or take a couple of inches)
- Cardio - 3 rounds of 2 minutes non stop kicking
- Friday Night Female Fight Club - training and socialising once a month with all the other women i'm running into.
- plus keeping my daughters going till they get their black belts - which is probably before mine
